Your stories...
Welcome to The Wall. Below are stories submitted by people just like you detailing what Skepticon has done to help better their lives, be it through giving them the confidence to stand up, or the courage that comes with knowing you're not alone.
"I thank the FSM for Skepticon (his noodly appendages be praised).
I was raised in a Fundamentalist Christian household in Southeast Missouri. I was home-schooled with Christian-based curriculum, and sheltered from anyone with differing views of the world and faith.
My deconversion has been a slow and sometimes painful process - especially when I live in the buckle of the Bible Belt, surrounded daily by churches and "fundies".
Skepticon II was an amazing experience for me. For once, I was surrounded by those who thought like me and lived their lives free of any god or dogma. I can't remember the last time I felt so at home.
PZ Myers made me want to learn more about biological evolution - a subject that was sorely neglected in my home-school curriculum. He pointed me in the direction of some very interesting wildlife, such as the "sneaky fucker" I never knew existed. :-]
Joe Nickell impressed upon me the importance of approaching supernatural claims with an open mind, allowing the evidence to speak for itself. I think I truly became a skeptic during his lecture - or at least defined myself as one.
DJ Grothe and JT Eberhard filled in the gaps in my own theories about morality, and how it is that we Atheists can me good without god. Both our evolution and our ability to adapt has led us to our current state of being both moral and godless - a state I am very happy to be in!
Lastly, Dan Barker truly made me feel like I was not alone in my journey from fundamentalism to freedom. He answered my questions about how to justify my former spiritual experiences and my new found skepticism. He explained exactly what I was feeling and struggling with at this point in my own life, and really drove home the idea that my experiences of the past were real - even if they were only in my own mind.
Skepticon answered questions, reinforced ideas and gave me new material to ponder. It is an experience I would recommend to anyone who is looking for honest answers to "life's big questions".
Everybody - be skeptical, and get your ass to Skepticon III!

"Ever since starting a skeptics society in the small city of Jackson,
Mississippi, I've been wanting to attend the amazing meeting, but have
never had the funding. This, I can attend - it's even within driving
distance, and my car can accommodate many non-accommodationists.
This is not just a "woo, let me register!" registration, I am quite
serious, and have already begun to put aside funding for what will
doubtlessly be my only vacation of the year"
